There were a number of significant challenges that Mike Herrick and his team would have to overcome to get this heating unit installed before the temperatures dropped. Because of the funeral home’s location and the location of the unit needing replacement, the removal and installation process was not as straightforward as most projects.
An additional complication came in the form of the increasingly colder temperatures. The weather forced them to escalate their timeline to ensure the replacement would be complete before it got too cold.
Before any on-site work could begin, Mike had to apply for the City of Boston Permitting. Unfortunately, they would need a lot of permits to begin work. Mike had to coordinate with the construction supervisor to apply for a building permit, which would allow them to make modifications to the building.
In addition to the building permit, a crane would be needed to remove and replace the old rooftop unit. This process would require a street permit since the crane would cause a traffic disturbance during the course of the project.
Another consideration was the staging required for pedestrians on the sidewalk in front of the funeral home. Mike and his team had to ensure that the staging was properly installed before they could even begin the installation process.
After all the permits and preparations had been made, they had to work with the city officials to provide a police detail for directing traffic during the project. The officers were needed to ensure that traffic could continue to flow smoothly throughout the duration of the installation.
Once all the permits had been attained, and the police detail was available to direct traffic, the project finally began. From its inception on September 25th, 2020, it took the team only two months and a few days to get the old system removed and a new American Standard heating system installed.
Because of the delays in permit approvals, the team performed the majority of their work on a Saturday. They knew that working on the weekends was necessary to have the new heating system working before the weather turned cold.
The parapet roofing proved another challenge for the team, which required precise work from the crane operator to ensure that the old unit was removed safely. The new unit had to be placed with the crane over the parapet wall, as well, which was another difficulty that Mike and his team overcame.
Once the new American Standard central HVAC system was placed on the roof, N.E.T.R., Inc. was finally able to complete the installation. The new rooftop heating unit was installed on November 30th, 2019, just in time to provide the funeral home’s meeting rooms with the heat they needed for winter.
