Somerville, MA Colonial Gets Year-Round Comfort with Mitsubishi Ductless

Homes like this single family colonial in Somerville are commonplace. They were built long before central air conditioning was available, and as the summers have gotten hotter and more humid, more homeowners are looking for options that are simply better than having multiple window air conditioners throughout a home, like a ductless mini split system.

Window units can seem like a great option at first. You can put them wherever you need them, but you soon come to realize that they have downsides. They don't do a great job of keeping every area in a room cool, and they're pretty noisy. When our homeowners called us here at NETR, we knew we could provide them with the perfect solution to solve their cooling problems with a custom designed Mitsubishi ductless system that could keep their home comfortable on demand. And, in addition to great air conditioning, the same ductless units also act as supplemental heaters, providing that little bit of extra heat you might want in a room, especially on the cold days leading up to turning on the whole home heating system, or on frosty mornings, where an extra burst of heat will help you start your day out right.

Problem: The homeowners of this colonial-style home used steam heat and had no air conditioning. The homeowners were looking for an energy efficient solution to solve problems with hot and cold spots in the home and find a better solution than relying on expensive window air conditioners during hot weather.

Solution: A five zone Mitsubishi Hyper-Heating ductless heat pump system will provide the family with best-in-class air conditioning and also provide supplemental heating to make sure the family is comfortable every day of the year.

For this home, we designed a ductless mini split system that created five zones of comfort in the home, for the living room, salon, attic, master bedroom and home office. One outdoor unit like this one can service up to eight indoor units at a time, and each indoor unit can be operated independently, creating a separate zone of heating and air conditioning wherever it's located.

The owners wanted to make sure they had the comfort they needed throughout the home. We put the first ductless unit in the third floor attic room, an area in a home that can be really hard to keep comfortable. While in most rooms, we use a different style of wall-mounted units, the space in attics often make wall placement more of a challenge. As a result, we chose one of Mitsubishi's floor mounted systems, which take up very little space, but provide the same level of comfort as the wall-mounted units do elsewhere in the home.

For the home office, the challenge is to provide comfort, but also provide the quiet environment people need these days not only to work, but to take conference calls, without the distractions of a loud, humming window unit in the background. Mitsubishi's ductless heating and air conditioning systems are well known for their whisper-quiet operation- only 22 db- so quiet, we have even had people install them in recording studios! The wall mounted unit can distribute the hot and cold air as needed, evenly throughout the room, while monitoring the room for humidity levels as well. That's particularly good news in a home office, where you want to make sure your computer equipment is not getting overheated.

The next space that needed special attention was the master bedroom. If you're like most people, you want to make sure your bedroom is one of the most comfortable rooms in the house. It means keeping it cool enough that you get a great night's sleep, but warm enough that you don't feel getting up in the morning seems like a bad idea. Mitsubishi's ductless systems are great for bedrooms, especially with their quiet operation. You can even use the handheld remote control from your bedside to adjust the temperature as needed, like adding an extra touch of heat before you get out of bed in the morning, to make sure your toes don't hit a frosty floor. And we all know about the mad dash to get ready in the morning if it's chilly in the house- the remote will let you add heat- or an extra bit if coolness if you get too warm- making sure your day starts out comfortable, every day of the year.

The homeowners also wanted to make sure the other main rooms where they spent their time- the salon and the living room, were also comfortable, so we added a ductless wall unit in each space, to make sure it also was as comfortable as the other spaces in the home. 

As you can see from the pictures, the wall units are mounted high up on a wall, out of the way. From there, they can monitor the temperature and humidity throughout the room, and adjust their speed and the distribution of air so that every inch of space in perfectly and equally comfortable- that's something no window air conditioner or space heater can manage.
